LED Light Application in Microalgae

The impact of light quality on photosynthesis will directly influence microalgae growth. Although, it is generally blue (420– 470 nm) or red (650–680 nm) light is beneficial to algal cells, most of time it is taxon dependent. Different light spectrum can be the most beneficial spectrum for the algae group to enhance different metabolites in different stage of cell cycle.

Recent developing in light emitting diodes (LEDs) technology provide narrow light emission spectra, high conversion efficiency and low heat emission light sources. That has been recognized as the most promising, effective and low-cost energy resource for microalgal cultivation. LED system allow to researcher to test effects of very specific light spectrum on microalgal growth and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites including astaxanthin. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently been recognized as effective light sources and low-cost energy sources for microalgae cultivation.

Our laboratory scale, Arduino controlled LED light chambers provide us unparellel opportunity to search light dependednt methabolisms of microalgae.
